Beltane: Meaning, Spirit Guides, and Practices for May 1st

Beltane is on May 1st, and if you’ve been feeling a shift lately, this is probably part of it.

It sits right between spring and summer, which means we’re moving out of the early “starting” energy of spring and into something that actually wants to grow, expand, and bloom. You can feel it in nature. Things aren’t just beginning anymore, they’re moving. Opening. Taking up space. And energetically, it tends to feel the same way.

Traditionally, Beltane is a fire festival. It’s about fertility, protection, and the turning of the season. It’s less about calling on specific deities and more about working with the land, the fire, and the momentum of life coming back online.

That said, in my work, I like to move through this time of year using a few different energetic lenses. Not as rules, just as ways to connect more intentionally.

For Beltane, the ones I come back to are Bel, Áine, and Cernunnos.

Áine: tend to what’s already growing

Áine’s energy is deeply tied to the land, fertility, and the natural world, which makes her a really natural fit for this season. Being with her energy isn’t about doing more, it’s about noticing more.

This can be simple. Bringing flowers into your space. Using herbs you already have. Placing them somewhere intentional instead of letting them blend into the background.

Or taking it outside and actually letting yourself see what’s growing, what’s changing, what’s coming alive.

There’s something about this time of year that reminds you growth is already happening, whether you’re tracking it or not.

Bel: Light the Fire and Let Things Move

Bel, or Belenus, brings in the energy of fire, light, and the sun, and many people connect that energy with the fires of Beltane.

You don’t need a bonfire for this to count. Lighting a candle with intention is enough.

Fire moves things. It transforms, clears, and creates space for new growth. This is a moment to reflect on where things have been feeling stuck or heavy, and gently bring some heat to it. That could mean letting it burn to the ground or giving it more motion and motivation.

Maybe that looks like taking one small action you’ve been avoiding, or choosing momentum over overthinking for once. It doesn’t need to be dramatic, it just needs to shift something.

Cernunnos: Come Back to Your Body

Cernunnos carries a very grounded, physical, alive kind of energy, and this time of year has a way of showing you where you’ve been disconnected from that.

There’s a reason Beltane has historically been celebrated with movement and dancing. Not as performance, but as participation.

This is a chance to get out of your head and back into your body.

One of the places I see this most clearly is in the pelvic bowl, which holds a lot of creative and life force energy. When it’s stagnant, everything can start to feel slow or blocked.

So instead of trying to think your way into clarity, let your body lead for a bit. Put on music, move in a way that feels natural, and let it be imperfect.

And if you want a little support getting things moving, this Pelvic Bowl Clearing video is one of my favorites. It’s a simple, guided way to reconnect with that part of your body and release some of the stuck energy that builds up there.

What To Expect During This Time

Beltane isn’t a quiet season, and it’s not particularly subtle.

Things tend to speed up. What felt slow can suddenly start to shift, sometimes all at once. It can feel like nothing is happening, and then everything opens.

If you’ve been in a slower phase, this is often where things begin to move again.

And usually, it asks you to meet that energy halfway. To notice what’s already growing, to bring a little fire to what’s been stagnant, to reconnect with your body and your own life force.

If you’ve been doing all of that and things still feel stuck, that’s usually a sign there’s something deeper ready to shift.

That’s exactly what we look at in energy healing sessions. Clearing what’s underneath so things can actually start flowing again.

There’s a natural momentum to this time of year. You don’t have to force it, you just have to be willing to move with it.
