Nervous System Healing 101

Last week, we went through a few foundational elements of Shamanic Healing. This week, we're diving into the next element of The Energy Studio Method: Nervous System Healing.

Now look, I could give you a full explanation of polyvagal theory, how to regulate, and how your nervous system directly impacts everything you do (in fact, I teach this in The Unblocking Method).

But instead of going into all of that, I want to share the three things that are most relevant to your wellness journey.

NERVOUS SYSTEM HEALING

1. Nervous System Regulation Is Very Similar to Strength Training or Rehabbing a Muscle

Sometimes things happen in life that injure a muscle and cause it to function less efficiently, with pain, or in some cases, not at all.

Your nervous system works the same way.

Your nervous system's automatic responses can be altered by acute events or by strain over an extended period of time.

The way we change your behaviors and help you behave more in alignment with who you are is through realigning and strengthening your nervous system (you know, so an email doesn't send you into fight or flight). We do this through small exercises that gradually teach your body that similar triggers and experiences can be safe.

In other words, we aren't going from trauma to running a nervous system marathon in a day...it's a process that requires rebuilding trust...and I recognize that "process" may feel intimidating but I promise, it can happen quickly when done with intention.

2. Why Does This Matter? CAPACITY.

When you're stuck in fight, flight, or freeze, it takes significantly more energy to move through your day.

That means your internal battery drains much faster than it would if your nervous system were in a more regulated state. So not only do you feel exhausted, but you may notice yourself responding in ways that don't feel like you...not because "that's the real you" but because your capacity is hella low.

And no, the answer is not to hide from life or try to control your environment. That's unrealistic.

The answer is to build capacity.

Do the nervous system strength training so that life can life all over you and your nervous system can say:

"In this moment, things feel terrible, but we will get through this."

3. The Crazy-Cool Overlap

Okay, but what does this have to do with Shamanic Healing?

Years ago, when I was in my Somatic Experiencing training, I felt super self-conscious because most of the other people in the program were therapists.

Despite other students commenting on how intuitive I was and how I seemed to know exactly what questions to ask to help release things in our practice clients' bodies (lol, which is basically what I do in healing sessions every day), I still felt like an outsider.

That changed when one of our teachers asked if I knew about Peter Levine and his connection to shamanic traditions.

It turns out that Peter Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing, has spoken openly about how his work was influenced by ancient yogic and shamanic traditions. He noticed profound similarities between traditional healing practices and what he was discovering about trauma and the nervous system.

In many ways, he was describing similar healing processes using a different language.
